Land of the free: Thank a Veteran

Veterans Day is designated as November 11th, and this year the designated federal holiday is observed on Monday, November 12th.  The Cuyahoga Group is a veteran-owned and operated family company, and we would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude and appreciation to all United States veterans, active military members, and their families.

To the following U.S. veterans who are part of The Cuyahoga Group team, we thank you for service and sacrifice:

Jim Variglotti, founder and CEO of The Cuyahoga Group,
U.S. Navy veteran who served honorably during the Vietnam War.

Vince Variglotti, President of The Cuyahoga Group,
served honorably for seven years as lieutenant in the U.S Navy during Enduring Freedom.

Gerald Ritch, Specialist Fifth Class,
served honorably for two years in U.S. Army, from July 1966 to June 1968.

Colton (Colt) Costello, served honorably for six years as Sergeant in the U.S. Army.

Tracey Boyer served honorably for eight years as Private First Class in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Jim Variglotti                                                           Vince Variglotti

On Veterans Day and every day, let us renew our commitment to showing our support and appreciation to our veterans and their families—they are all American heroes.

“True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.”—Arthur Ashe

Tennis legend Arthur Ashe served as First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. In 1993, he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and is named for the ESPY Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

No person, and no veteran, should be homeless in our nation

Homelessness in our nation is a tragic reality, and many of those living on the streets are United States veterans. One of the reasons for the high number of homeless veterans is  linked to PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)—directly connected to their service to our nation.  For information on how to help, and to review top-rated charities whose mission is to offer treatment, housing and supportive services to homeless veterans, click here.

Remembering the true meaning of Memorial Day

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of the summer season—the time to get away for the weekend, or relax in the backyard with family and friends, fire up the grill, and enjoy the day with a favorite beverage in hand. It’s a day off of work for many, and it’s also the time when we’re swarmed by Memorial Day sales and promotions, scattered across the virtual and media landscape.

Amid all of this, the true meaning of Memorial Day often fades into the background or gets lost altogether.

As a veteran-owned and operated company, The Cuyahoga Group offers a reminder that Memorial Day is a federal day of observance. Together, we stand in honor and remembrance of the men and women of the U.S. military who died while in service to our country.

The wearing of poppies in honor of America’s war dead is traditionally done on Memorial Day. The origin of the red poppy as a modern-day symbol of this day was the idea of Moina Belle Michael who worked with veterans returning home for war. Inspired by the poem, In Flanders Fields, she initiated the idea of selling silk poppies to financially assist disabled veterans.

So, on this Monday, May 28, 2018, let us all take a moment to honor and remember our women and men in uniform who paid the ultimate price in defending our freedoms.

And, instead of hurriedly walking by the veteran who is selling poppies to raise funds for veterans services, or for the local VFW hall, let’s take a moment to stop and say ‘thank you’ for their service and sacrifice.

Today and every day, we salute all of our United States veterans.

Memory from Sherry: “For many years Uncle Joe, Uncle Nick and my Dad marched in the parade. I also marched with the Girl Scouts! I was so proud to do that. Always after the parade to the cemetery we would go to the VFW broadway and Forbes road. Shots and beers were the drinks of the day!”

A Personal Mother’s Day Letter to My Mom, Sherry Variglotti.

I have to pinch myself at times when I realize that my incredible family has been able to create an environment of love, respect, and trust—sharing the emotional and intellectual challenges of running a business—and at the same time, being a family. My mom, Sherry Variglotti, is the foundation of our family, and I am eternally grateful that she is my mom.

Also, I am absolutely blown away by the people of our Cuyahoga Group company—especially our working mothers—I am so proud to work with you every day.

As Mother’s Day approaches, I want to say thank you to Sherry Variglotti. Many of you know her as the mom of Vince and I, and as Jim’s wife. What you may not know is that she is a nurse who supported our family when the business got started. She has always been the CEO: Chief Emotional Officer. She is the one who nurtures our family’s traditions and beliefs, sets the tone for family interactions—and she is the glue who keeps us close together.

There are so many good things about her, too many to list. When I was a kid, her hugs and butterfly kisses fixed everything. Her sense of humor is contagious and her heart is huge. She is my mentor, friend and mom. I am lucky and blessed to call her my mom. When I was little she always smelled so pretty- Obsession by Este Lauder was her fragrance. Her home-cooked meals brought our family together to share stories, laugh and appreciation. The values she taught are represented every day in me and throughout my life.

She has celebrated the good and bad with me and her love is always consistent. Her rule of life is simple: honesty. Always be honest and true to yourself and with others. Work hard to finish a task and take care of the people around you. Words cannot adequately express how much I appreciate and respect you. I love you mom, and I am so grateful and happy to be your daughter.

I know that your mom is as special to you as mine is to me, and I want to honor the significant mother-child bond of every daughter and son who reads this.

I’d also like to take a moment to honor and remember the moms who are no longer with us—their love and care will forever have an immeasurable impact on their families, and they live on in the hearts and memories of their children—and will never be forgotten.

Thank you for allowing me to tell you about my mom, Sherry (also known as Sherbear). For all the working moms out there, I just want to take a moment to congratulate and honor you on Mother’s Day. Juggling work, home, and family is really hard, and you deserve major kudos for ALL you do. Your dedication to both work and family pays off. And one thing’s for sure… you are appreciated.

So, for my mom, and every mom –I hope you enjoy this holiday—dedicated just to you!

Happy Mother’s Day!
– Carla Variglotti

The Cuyahoga Group celebrates the Cleveland Indians Home Opener!

“Take me out to the ball game, take me out with the crowd…” We all know the words to this purely American vintage tune that we sing during the seventh-inning stretch—baseball is back! Nothing says winter is over in Cleveland like the arrival of the boys of summer down at the old ball park. So, whether snow, rain, sleet or sun, the promise of summer days unofficially arrives with the first pitch at the Cleveland Indians home opener today, April 6th—so let’s play ball!

The Cuyahoga Group began the celebration of the Cleveland Indians Home Opener with yesterday’s Double Dog Day promotion, and today we’re continuing our tribute by encouraging all Cuyahoga Group associates to wear their favorite Cleveland Indians gear.

If you can’t make it down to Progressive Field today, no problem! Just head on down to one of our micro markets, fresh food, or snack and beverage vending machines at your workplace for a quick break and delicious ballpark fare options, such as hot dogs, homemade subs and sandwiches, pizza, refreshing beverages and tasty treats like peanuts, chips, candy and popcorn! Happy Valentine’s Day from The Cuyahoga Group!

The month of February has true heart (and true grit, if you happen to live north of the Mason-Dixon line). Regardless of the weather, Cupid will draw back his bow on February 14th, firing sparks in red, pink and chocolate into the middle of an otherwise dreary month. From candy hearts, greeting cards and flowers, to dinners out or dinners in, marriage proposals and weddings—Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world.

Cuyahoga Group supports Heart-Healthy Vending & Market Choices

Make heart healthy changes easy and fun!

  • Move: Take a walk, run, hike, dance, yoga, cycle, skate—whatever physical activity you enjoy, make the time to do it on a regular basis. Even a 20-minute walk, a few times per week, will reap significant health benefits.
  • Eat: Plenty of whole foods, including fresh veggies, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds;
  • Relax: Don’t worry, be happy. Take up a hobby, learn something new, adopt a furry friend, or volunteer your time and talents. Giving to others is known to lower blood pressure and increase the happy meter.
  • Love, laugh, hug, sing, dance and be grateful: often.
  • When life is not a bowl of candy hearts: Reach out to a trusted friend or loved one; Seeking support or help is a sign of strength.
