The Cuyahoga Group Employee Spotlight: Robert Quentin Smith

Robert Quentin Smith, Dining Manager of the Hearthside Café for The Cuyahoga Group, was recently profiled in Pluggedin, our quarterly employee newsletter.  Quentin’s unwavering work ethic, excellent customer relations skills, and ability to effectively manage day-to-day operations while keeping our customers first and foremost at the Café, has allowed him to quickly rise through the ranks, and his efforts have not gone unnoticed. Congratulations, Quentin! Thank you for your dedication and friendship!

Let’s get to know Quentin a little better: 
 

How long have you worked at The Cuyahoga Group and what is your role?
Quentin: I began working as a cook and cashier in December of 2016, and I have been the Dining Manager since March of 2018.
 

What do you like most about your job, and why?
Quentin: I like having the freedom of designing my own menu and seeing the positive reaction and hearing the positive feedback from customers when they enjoy our food.
 

         

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
Quentin: I have been playing guitar for more than 17 years.
 

What is your favorite food/favorite meal? 
QuentinMy favorite meal is Yakisoba.
 

What is your favorite type of music? 
Quentin: My favorite bands are Black Sabbath and The Pixies.
 

Please tell us about a goal you’d like to accomplish someday:
Quentin: My current goal in life is to own a home and have all my bills on auto-pay.

The Season of Gratitude

Thanksgiving Day brought us together with family and friends—and gave us a renewed sense of gratitude. To show our appreciation to our customers and team members, The Cuyahoga Group held our annual November Thankful Thursdays, with giveaways and promotions that brought a spark of happiness to an already reflective and joyous time of year.

On October 5th and every day, Do Something Nice!

The Life and Times of Marty V: Meet the pup who inspired the brand!

The Cuyahoga Group is happy to announce our latest in fresh, delicious meal options for your
workplace, an All-American favorite: The Marty V Hotdog line!

 

We all know that Mary V is a top dog, but he isn’t just spending his time hotdogging around with a pretty face —he’s got smarts too. In fact, Marty V has a real knack for inspiring great food for your workplace, and he sure knows his way around a kitchen (floor, just ask the crumbs). So, let’s take a few moments to get to know this king among canines. We recently sat down for an interview with Marty V, and although he was fidgety at times and barked once, he seemed (mostly) agreeable to answering all the questions that we asked him.

 

     

 

How old are you, and what’s your astrological sign?

Marty: I just turned one year old on July 30th – that’s about seven years old in human years.
My 
astrological sign is Leo, the majestic Lion, which describes me perfectly.

 

You are adorable and fluffy, what is your heritage?

Marty: Thank you, but fluffy, really? I’ll ignore that. I am of Australian Labradoodle descent.

 

Where do you live and with whom do you live?

Marty: I live with my humans, aka mom and dad. We live in Florida for six months then back
to Ohio for the other six. I love Florida for two reasons: I have a lot of seagull friends, and dogs
are allowed to drive cars in the sunshine state. Ohio has some catching up to do.

 

What is your biggest pet peeve? (no pun intended)

Marty: Let me put it this way, I love my family, and I appreciate that they totally adore me, but
all the constant cuddling!? I repeatedly tell them I need some personal space, but they don’t
listen.

 

Who is your favorite human? And tell us why that human is your favorite!

Marty: Mom, don’t be upset, but I have to say dad. He ‘gets’ me better than anyone.

 

Describe your personality to us: are you the quiet, thoughtful type? Or a real hotdog and life of the party? Or maybe, you’re a mix of both?

Marty: Are you kidding me? I’m the life of the party, paws down. (Or paws up, if I’m kickin’ an
awesome groove).

 

Do you have any hobbies? If so, please describe them for us!

Marty: I enjoy all types of music, from Rhianna, to Zeppelin, to Mozart. When my parents are
away, I crank it up, and I mean really loud. One time, the neighbors called the cops, and I
was like, ‘whatever, I gotta be me.’ The officer understood. I also enjoy long walks, swimming,
water sports, playing ball, chasing chipmunks and drinking martinis in the backyard after a
long day—just normal stuff.

 

What is your favorite food and favorite snack?

Marty: Sweet potatoes and hot dogs—not necessarily together. Anything mom or dad
cooks would be great, but they’re pretty strict with my diet.

 

What was your inspiration for the Marty V Hotdog Line?

Marty: Well, think about it—who doesn’t love a great hotdog? Mic drop.

 

What do you love best about working for the Cuyahoga Group?

Marty: I love the flexible hours, and The Cuyahoga Group has so many great associates,
except for those three or four ‘cat’ people—but I won’t name names.

The innovative ideas and team effort at our Erie, PA branch, led by Branch Manager, Lorre White, brought design and functionality upgrades to the interior and exterior of our offices there, and is a great example of how the ideas and dedication of our team members can uplift an entire office location. The Cuyahoga Group’s Erie Branch includes eastern OH, PA and western NY regions.   

 

The upgrades have been so well received that The Cuyahoga Group is expanding the new color schemes, flooring and office layout changes to our Maple Heights, North Ridgeville and Columbus locations.

Which building areas were upgraded, and what type of work was done?   

Lorre: We completed multiple interior and exterior upgrades including: roof sealing, exterior door frame replacement, drywall repairs, restroom update, new vinyl waterproof flooring, wainscoting in the hallway, updated floor trim, and emergency lighting. The interior offices received a nice, fresh coat of paint.   

 

Did you have to hire outside contractors to do the work?  

Lorre: No, all the work was done by our internal team members.  

 

Tell us a little bit about what inspired you to make the upgrades in Erie and what was the inspiration behind your choices for materials and color scheme?  

Lorre: We have a very small office in an older building in Erie. When we moved from Conneaut, everyone was far too busy completing the everyday tasks of running the business to reorganize and update the building.  Through tremendous team effort, we sorted through, organized and moved furniture, and reorganized offices to create an open, common space and a new driver’s area, to provide the office space needed and create a much more open flow. We chose a beachy blue and gray color scheme to bring a sense of calm to an otherwise busy work environment.  And considering the crazy weather in Erie, the waterproof vinyl flooring will be a welcome addition during the winter months. 

 

Did you initiate the project? Tell us a little about that  

Lorre: Vince (Vince Variglotti, President) and I had several discussions regarding the state of some of the items in the building and agreed that as soon as we were able to do so, we should make the improvements to create a better work environment for all.  Vince, Carla (Carla Variglotti, Vice President) and Jim (Jim Variglotti, Founder and CEO) were all extremely supportive of the changes and excited to watch the progress unfold throughout the transformation.

 

Have you received feedback from team members or guests?   

Lorre: All the feedback has been very positive, from our drivers who have more space to manage their beginning and endofday tasks, to all guests and coworkers who have complimented the updated look, serene colors and more organized and open feel of the space.   

 

Are the initial upgrades complete, and do you have any future projects planned 

Lorre: We are still completing a few small projects and painting the last areas on the weekends.  Our next big adventure is to expand our warehouse space, which will be greatly needed as we continue to grow our business in the tri-state area!
